The Solent And District Land Rover Club

Hogs Enclosure March 12th 2006

by Jeff Harris

Joint event SADLRC / Wessex Hillrunners

Long way to go, but the site had promise or so I was told. I thought this was going to be difficult as by the Wednesday prior we were down to just a few marshals. Got a lift up with my mate Steve, not surprised to be the first on site with the set up crew from WH, but later amazed to find I was the only one?

We had a few members turn up, I think they all had a great day. The entrance is awkward for Trailers and big vans and straight onto the sand. The price for our members altered due to no real input from SAD, but I thought it was worth it when I got to go out with Steve.

The site is quite large and open with a wooded section in the middle, which is tight and twisty, with some great sections. The open bits are still great, even the flat bits as they often swallowed a vehicle with no warning. Steve found a great bit in the woods; some idiot suggested going the other way. He believed me, only to winch the last bit. I then suggested another bit, oops stuck again, although getting him out was fun, I almost ended up in the crud. Funny the third suggestion he said NO. However a 90 from SAD looked at it, believed he could do it and with some encouragement, promptly got stuck. ….. Onions. Whilst almost out we hooked on and winched him out. Best bit was a Marshall laughing at the stuck 90 in a big hole, only to get stuck on the flat. Remember take the piss, but it will bite back.

One funny aspect of the sand was the amount of punctures. It’s the sand getting under the edge of the tyre, and rolling under the bead, allowing the air to get out. Many had got stuck with 2 or more flats. One guy had alloy wheels on a RR, it was an early one so he had ground off some of the wheel to make them fit (not the 5th one) and it took ½ hour and knackered the wheel getting it off. Then he needed another wheel??

One car rolled a bit of a mess, but no one was hurt and the Marshall/emergency system worked with everyone going off to help.

If you get the chance you need to see this site, close to Slab, but it’s a bit different.
